`npm audit` for AI Agent Skills — checks what a skill claims against what it actually does. Offline, deterministic, evidence-grade, one Rust binary. No LLM, no telemetry, no accounts.
Overview
From the repository's own README, as read at the audited commit. Badges and raw HTML are left out.
*`npm audit` for AI Agent Skills — except it also checks what a skill claims against what it actually does.*
SkillGuard reads a skill before you install it, reports every capability it can prove with a file, a line and the original text, and fails the gate when a skill does something it never declared. Offline, deterministic, one Rust binary. No LLM, no accounts, no telemetry.

The problem
An Agent Skill is not just Markdown any more:
SKILL.md + scripts/ + dependencies + external URLs + package-manager commands + permissions
It runs with your full user privileges. It can read ~/.ssh, rewrite your shell rc, pipe a download straight into bash, and call any host on the internet. That is a software supply chain, and the ecosystem is already being hit:

Host compatibility
What the documentation claims. We have not run a compatibility test.

What it tells the agent
The instruction file, verbatim from the audited commit — this is the text the model reads, and the surface the audit's instruction layer examines. Quoted here so you can judge it without cloning anything.

Questions
What does the SkillGuard skill do?
`npm audit` for AI Agent Skills — checks what a skill claims against what it actually does. Offline, deterministic, evidence-grade, one Rust binary. No LLM, no telemetry, no accounts.
Is SkillGuard safe to install?
No — not without reading the findings first. The audit graded it F (29/100) and found 21 critical or high issues in the source. Each one is listed on this page with the file and line it is on.
What can SkillGuard access on my machine?
The audit observed that it reaches the network, runs shell commands and reads or writes files. Each of those is consistent with what it says it does. Secrets in the source: found — see the findings.
Which assistants does SkillGuard work with?
Its documentation mentions claude-code, codex, copilot, cursor, openclaw and windsurf. That is what the text claims, not a compatibility test we ran.
How current is this page?
The grade is for one exact copy of the source (8fb1dcc641cf), read on 2026-10-12. The repository is watched, and a new audit runs when it changes — this is the first audit.
