Reasonbook, formerly CMOS, is the project record your agents keep: what was decided, why, what was learned, and what remains. The next session can pick up from that record, even in another tool. You make the decisions; agents handle the bookkeeping. No dashboard account is required.
See it work in a 75-second replay of recorded runs in Claude Code and Codex, and read what it sends and stores.
Install it in Claude Code
Install the plugin once for all your projects:
claude plugin marketplace add kneelinghorse/reasonbook claude plugin install reasonbook@reasonbook
Upgrading from cmos@cmos? Uninstall it before refreshing the marketplace, using claude plugin uninstall cmos@cmos --scope user (or its original project or local scope), then install reasonbook@reasonbook. For a local installation, run the command from that project. If the marketplace already refreshed and uninstall says “not found”, use the tested recovery steps. Upgrade every client before moving an existing record.
For candidate testing, replace kneelinghorse/reasonbook with this checkout's absolute path. Start a new Claude Code session after installation. The plugin supplies the MCP server, hooks and commands; its first cold session may report that Reasonbook is installing and load the record from the next session. Use /reasonbook:init for a new record, /reasonbook:start to read it, /reasonbook:close-out to finish work, /reasonbook:plan to plan, and /reasonbook:build to execute. Plugin installation. Exposed tools (48)
38 read · 9 write · 1 destructive. Blast radius: 1 tool can delete or overwrite — an agent that can be talked into calling a tool can be talked into calling this one.
| Tool | Risk | Description |
|---|---|---|
P | read | |
Reasonbook | read | MCP server for Reasonbook integration |
rbook_adversarial | read | A synthetic tool | whose own description carries a pipe. |
rbook_agent_onboard | write | Get aggregated onboarding payload for agent cold-start. Returns project identity, active session, pending missions, recent decisions, and suggested actions. |

rbook_context | read | Consolidated context tool with action parameter support. |
rbook_context_history | read | View the context snapshot timeline. Returns a paginated list of snapshots showing when contexts were captured. Use to understand project history, review past states, or find a specific snapshot to restore. |
rbook_context_snapshot | read | Take a strategic snapshot of a Reasonbook context. Creates an entry in context_snapshots table with timestamp. Use after sprint completions, major architectural decisions, or strategic milestones to preserve context history. |
rbook_context_update | write | Update Reasonbook contexts in aggregate or manual mode. Aggregate mode pulls recent session captures into master_context. Manual mode supports merge-only array updates and nested field updates in master_context or project_context. Creates automatic snapshot after each update. |
rbook_context_view | read | Render aggregated context from Reasonbook database. Returns master_context (project history, decisions, constraints) and project_context (current session state and next steps) merged. Use this to understand project state before starting work. |
rbook_db | read | Consolidated database admin tool with action parameter support. |
rbook_db_health | read | Check Reasonbook database connectivity and health. Returns database stats including table counts, last activity timestamps, and file information. Use this to verify Reasonbook is properly configured before running other Reasonbook operations. |
rbook_db_restore | read | Restore the active Reasonbook SQLite database from a named snapshot. |
rbook_db_snapshot | write | Create or list SQLite database snapshots for Reasonbook safety operations. |

rbook_session | read | Consolidated session tool with action parameter support. |
rbook_session_capture | read | Capture an insight. Categories: decision (choices made), learning (what was learned), constraint (limitations discovered), context (background info), next-step (action items). No session is required: without one, the capture lands in the caller |
rbook_session_complete | read | Complete an active session with a summary. Captures are aggregated into master context. Only active sessions can be completed. |
rbook_session_list | read | List sessions with optional filtering by status, type, or sprint. Returns paginated results sorted by most recent first. |

Questions
What is the Reasonbook MCP server?
Reasonbook: decisions that survive the session, in a local record AI agents keep.
What tools does Reasonbook expose?
48 in total: 38 read-only, 9 that write, and 1 that can delete or overwrite (rbook_project_unregister). Every one is listed on this page with its risk.
Is Reasonbook safe to connect to an agent?
No — not without reading the findings first. The audit graded it F (55/100) and found 5 critical or high issues in the source. Each one is listed on this page with the file and line it is on. Separately from the audit: 1 of its tools can destroy data, so scope the token you give it to what you actually need.
What credentials does Reasonbook need?
It reads ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, GOOGLE_GEMINI_API_KEY, RBOOK_DASHBOARD_API_KEY and RBOOK_DASHBOARD_PASSWORD from the environment. Give it a token scoped to the least it needs — an agent that can be talked into calling a tool can be talked into calling it with your credentials.
How does Reasonbook run?
It speaks stdio, so it runs as a local process your client starts. It is published on npm as @aquex/reasonbook at 4.0.1.
How current is this page?
The grade is for one exact copy of the source (735d53c11af1), read on 2026-10-13. The repository is watched and re-audited when it changes.
