Overview
From the repository's own README, as read at the audited commit. Badges and raw HTML are left out.
Teach Claude to play jazz. The power of language models is in their improvisational ability, sometimes called hallucinations. The power of jazz is how the math creates the space for exploring new territory safely. Music theory — translated through a good player, a good band, and a good standard that says when to walk and when to leap. In honor and reverence for John Coltrane, whose courage to leap, and to leap, and to leap has taught so many to find the bravery to do the same themselves. In his footsteps, Eugene — Tokyo, June 2026

Run it
Node 26 or newer is required. A skill's network grant is enforced by --allow-net, which arrived in Node 25 (already end-of-life); on Node 24 and older a skill can reach the network with no gate at all. So coltrane refuses to run a skill on anything older than 26 — coltrane, coltrane-server and every skill execution refuse at start, naming the reason; there is no degraded mode. Imported as a library (@eir-labs/coltrane/tool_surface, ./genome_store), the package installs and loads on Node 24.
nvm install 26 # or any Node 26+ npm install -g @eir-labs/coltrane
Three verbs and a JSON file:
coltrane validate # load the genome; non-zero exit on any error coltrane dispatch --input @in.json --depth skim coltrane trace # walk a result back to its root signals
And a fourth for the band pattern: coltrane work claims one queued gig from an organization's store — atomically, under a lease, authorized by the chair contract the agent is seated on — runs it under the claimed gig's own id, and drains the sealed results back. A queue, a worker, and an audit chain, with no coo

11 read · 3 write · 1 destructive. Blast radius: 1 tool can delete or overwrite — an agent that can be talked into calling a tool can be talked into calling this one.
| Tool | Risk | Description |
|---|---|---|
cancel_gig | write | Cancel one QUEUED run before a drain worker claims it, so no worker ever runs it. Only a queued gig can be cancelled — a running gig is stopped with gig_abort, and the store refuses a claimed/running/terminal row. Members cancel as themselves; agent tokens are scoped to their org. |
delete_file | destructive | Delete the file at the given path. Use with care; deletion is permanent. |
dispatch_gig | write | Queue one run of a standard. Queuing only — a drain worker claims and runs it. Members dispatch as themselves (governor-gated); agent tokens are limited to their exact may_dispatch list. |
fetch_url | read | Fetch the content at the given URL. Returns the response body as a string. |
gig_outputs | read | A gig |
gig_status | read | One gig |
institution_browse | read | The institutions your organizations answer to, and whether each of their laws has TEETH — |
list_files | read | List files in the given directory under the workspace root. |
list_gigs | read | The queue and the history — the gig table IS the queue. Optionally filter by status (queued|running|completed|failed|aborted). |
list_standards | read | The standards in your organizations |
mcp__coltrane__output_query | read | read sealed outputs |
mcp__coltrane__output_write | write | seal an output |
mcp__s__read | read | read a file |
read_doc | read | Read a document at the given absolute or relative path under the workspace root and return its content. |
roster | read | The named players and humans of your organizations — names, forebears, status (member surface). |

Questions
What tools does @eir-labs/coltrane expose?
15 in total: 11 read-only, 3 that write, and 1 that can delete or overwrite (delete_file). Every one is listed on this page with its risk.
Is @eir-labs/coltrane safe to connect to an agent?
The audit found nothing in the source that contradicts what it says it does, and graded it B (81/100). Grade A is held back for packages that have also passed a sandboxed behavioural run, which is why a clean server reads B. Separately from the audit: 1 of its tools can destroy data, so scope the token you give it to what you actually need.
What credentials does @eir-labs/coltrane need?
It reads COLTRANE_SANDBOX_PROBE_SECRET from the environment. Give it a token scoped to the least it needs — an agent that can be talked into calling a tool can be talked into calling it with your credentials.
How does @eir-labs/coltrane run?
It speaks stdio and streamable-http, so it runs as a local process your client starts. It is published on npm as @eir-labs/coltrane at 0.12.0.
How current is this page?
The grade is for one exact copy of the source (36f962428ef2), read on 2026-10-12. The repository is watched and re-audited when it changes.
