Usage

Docker (Recommended)

The easiest way to run chess-mcp with Claude Desktop is using Docker. If you don't have Docker installed, you can get it from Docker's official website.

Edit your Claude Desktop config file:

  • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Then add the following configuration:

{
"mcpServers": {
"chess": {
"command": "docker",
"args": [
"run",
"--rm",
"-i",
"pab1it0/chess-mcp"
]
}
}
}

Running with UV

Alternatively, you can run the server directly using UV. Edit your Claude Desktop config file (locations listed above) and add the server configuration:

{
"mcpServers": {
"chess": {
"command": "uv",
"args": [
"--directory",
"",
"run",
"src/chess_mcp/main.py"
]
}
}
}

Built from this server's own package name, version and transport as found in its source — not copied from anyone's documentation, so it cannot drift against a page we do not control.

Questions

What is the Chess.com MCP server?

A Model Context Protocol server for Chess.com's Published Data API. This provides access to Chess.com player data, game records, and other public information through standardized MCP interfaces, allowing AI assistants to search and analyze chess information.

What tools does Chess.com expose?

10 in total: 10 read-only, 0 that write, and 0 that can delete or overwrite. Every one is listed on this page with its risk.

Is Chess.com safe to connect to an agent?

The audit found nothing in the source that contradicts what it says it does, and graded it B (89/100). Grade A is held back for packages that have also passed a sandboxed behavioural run, which is why a clean server reads B.

What credentials does Chess.com need?

No credential environment variables were found in its source, so it appears to need none.

How does Chess.com run?

It speaks sse and stdio, so it runs as a local process your client starts. It is published on PyPI as chess_mcp.

How current is this page?

The grade is for one exact copy of the source (dffdc929e642), read on 2026-10-07. The repository is watched and re-audited when it changes.
