Overview

From the repository's own README, as read at the audited commit. Badges and raw HTML are left out.

[!NOTE] This repository is archived. As of v2.8, Bear now includes a native MCP server implementation, making this standalone server unnecessary.

Installation

[!NOTE] You'll need `uv` installed on your system to use uvx command.

goose

to launch the installer, then click "Yes" to confirm the installation. Set BEAR_API_TOKEN environment variable to your api token.

Manually configuration

You can also directly edit the config file (~/.config/goose/config.yaml) to include the following entry:

extensions:
bear:
name: Bear
cmd: uvx
args: [--from, git+https://github.com/jkawamoto/mcp-bear, mcp-bear]
envs: { "BEAR_API_TOKEN": "" }
enabled: true
type: stdio

Connect

Built from this server's own package name, version and transport as found in its source — not copied from anyone's documentation, so it cannot drift against a page we do not control. Replace the environment placeholders with a token scoped to the least it needs.

Questions

What is the Bear MCP server?

A MCP server for interacting with Bear note-taking software.

What tools does Bear expose?

7 in total: 6 read-only, 0 that write, and 1 that can delete or overwrite (delete_tag). Every one is listed on this page with its risk.

Is Bear safe to connect to an agent?

The audit found nothing in the source that contradicts what it says it does, and graded it B (89/100). Grade A is held back for packages that have also passed a sandboxed behavioural run, which is why a clean server reads B. Separately from the audit: 1 of its tools can destroy data, so scope the token you give it to what you actually need.

What credentials does Bear need?

It reads BEAR_API_TOKEN from the environment. Give it a token scoped to the least it needs — an agent that can be talked into calling a tool can be talked into calling it with your credentials.

How does Bear run?

It speaks stdio, so it runs as a local process your client starts. It is published on PyPI as mcp-bear.

How current is this page?

The grade is for one exact copy of the source (6f3147a9aaf7), read on 2026-10-07. The repository is watched and re-audited when it changes.
